The Current count of medals shows the United States leading with 19 Gold medals followed by China with 18. The final count of the medals may be different this year because some new countries are emerging as unexpected winners and some other are facing difficulties in some sports they used to dominate.
The US dominance in basketball, for instance, is being seriously challenged by other nations. The new world order is creating a greater exposure for many nations to the modern techniques of training and performing, allowing them to compete more efficiently against the traditional winning nations. The collapse of the Soviet Union permitted the appearance of a plethora of athletic talents that, in the past, could have been kept hidden from the outside world. Russia is performing well but not at the level of the former Soviet Union.
The games are supposed to be apolitical but they are a sample of the political reality of the world. The signs of the changes in the geopolitics of power in the world could be seen through the fluctuations of the medals count. As a case study, one can follow China which shows, through the performance of its athletes, the signs of its rise as a world power.
