Food Crisis Renews Haiti's Agony
Haitians are no strangers to hunger. But even the resilience of the hemisphere's poorest citizens can be pushed too far, and with world food prices spiking this year due to shrinking harvests, burgeoning demand and skyrocketing fuel prices, it should be little surprise that Haiti is once again erupting in angry violence. As unrest spread from the countryside, protesters shut down the capital, Port-au-Prince, on Tuesday to decry lavi che — the Creole term for the high cost of living.

Haiti cuts cost of rice to stop food riots
PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) - The Haitian government and the private sector of the impoverished Caribbean country announced an emergency plan on Saturday to bring down the price of rice by about 15 percent in a bid to stop food riots. President Rene Preval, under fire from critics for not doing enough about the soaring cost of living after more than a week of violent protests, said the price cut would be partly funded by the Haitian private sector and partly by money from international donors.

Uneasy calm in Haiti after food price protests
Haitian President Rene Preval told demonstrators to "cool it" on Wednesday as he sought to end days of violent protests over soaring food prices in the impoverished Caribbean nation. His appeal, in a national address, brought an uneasy calm to Haiti a day after protesters paralyzed the capital and tried to storm the presidential palace to demand government action over the cost of food.

AP - More aid is on the way to cyclone-ravaged Myanmar — but so is the heavy rain. A week after Cyclone Nargis flattened low-lying villages and killed whole families at a time, the military junta finally agreed Friday to allow a U.S. cargo plane to bring in food and other supplies to the isolated country. Myanmar gave the green light after confiscating other shipments, prompting the U.N. to order a temporary freeze in shipments.
