Officials: Pirates, terrorists not linked directly
WASHINGTON – U.S. officials have found no direct ties between East African pirates and terrorist groups but continue to search for signs of links between the two factions in the wake of the Indian Ocean hostage incident. It was not clear whether officials were specifically scrutinizing the Somali pirates who boarded the Maersk Alabama on Tuesday and fled in a lifeboat after taking hostage the cargo ship's captain.

Crew retakes US ship from Somali pirates
NAIROBI, Kenya – In a riveting high-seas drama, an unarmed American crew wrested control of their U.S.-flagged cargo ship from Somali pirates Wednesday and sent them fleeing to a lifeboat with the captain as hostage.

The destroyer USS Bainbridge, one of a half dozen warships that headed for the area, arrived at the scene Thursday morning a few hours before dawn, said Kevin Speers, a spokesman for the company that owns the Maersk Alabama. He said the boat with the pirates was floating near the ship, the first with an American crew to be taken by pirates off the Horn of Africa.

Pope condemns sorcery, urges Angolans to convert
LUANDA, Angola – Tens of thousands of Angola's Catholics lined the streets of the capital Saturday for a blessing from Pope Benedict XVI, who urged the country's faithful to reach out and convert people who believe in witchcraft. "In today's Angola," he said at Mass in Luanda, "Catholics should offer the message of Christ to the many who live in the fear of spirits, of evil powers by whom they feel threatened."

Zimbabwe's Tsvangirai takes office as PM
HARARE (Reuters) – Zimbabwe's opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai was sworn in as prime minister on Wednesday by old enemy President Robert Mugabe and vowed to salvage the ruined economy.

Their power-sharing deal has raised hopes among Zimbabweans of an end to widespread hardship, but bitter wrangling since they signed their agreement in September has stirred doubts over whether they can work together to bring in aid and investment.

Tsvangirai, 56, was sworn in by Mugabe, 84, who has ruled with his ZANU-PF party since independence from Britain in 1980. Tsvangirai gave a little smile as he finished taking the oath in front of Mugabe, who displayed his usual confidence.

"I want to assure you that this is the only workable arrangement and I can assure you that I and my party will give it our utmost," said Tsvangirai, who cut his political teeth in the labor movement as a mine foreman.

Mugabe said the parties should build on the deal "by turning our swords into ploughshares."

Zimbabwe opposition leader hemmed in, options few
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa - The two paths of Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai are telling: Mugabe, newly sworn in as Zimbabwe's president again, is at a summit of African leaders while the opposition leader holes up in a Western embassy in Zimbabwe's capital. Tsvangirai is hemmed in by Mugabe's policemen, soldiers and ruling party thugs as well as the president's cozy relationship with fellow African leaders.
