Bouteflika, whom she interviewed in 2002 in her previous incarnation as a star reporter for Canadian television. She will also preside over a forum of Algerian and Canadian business executives.

Canada invested some three million Canadian dollars (2.6 million US dollars, 2 million euros) in Algeria, including for the construction of two power plants, dams and roads.

Some 200 Algerian social associations, particularly women's projects, also benefit from Canadian support.

The Canadian embassy in Algiers announced on Thursday the financing of three new social projects costing 110,000 Canadian dollars.

Business exchanges between the two countries increased to four billion Canadian dollars in both directions in 2005. Some 50,000 Algerians live in Canada, many of whom have gained Canadian nationality.

After Algeria, Jean will travel to Mali, Ghana, South Africa and Morocco before returning to Canada on December 11.

Jean has been Canada's head of state since September 2005.
